The cost of owning a pet, be it a dog, cat or other animal can be a sizable expense, especially if you are a responsible pet owner. Quality food, grooming, regular shots, de-worming, health exams and health care can really add up. Finding ways to save money on these things is vital to maintaining a balanced budget, as well as a healthy, happy pet. Here are a few good choices!

San Fernando Valley:
First on the low cost list is Red Barn Feed and Pet. With 4 locations in the San Fernando Valley, you’ll save 10%-50% on pet food and supplies everyday. Prices here are always lower than any other store! Plus they have Low Cost Shot Clinics throughout the week.

Also at Red Barn Pet and Feed are Low Cost Spay & Neuter Clinics held by Thee Lucy Pet Foundation.

Then there is A Free Spay/ Neuter at Fix Nation for Feral, Stray, Homeless cats and rescue cats on Saturdays.

San Gabriel Valley:
The Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA offers low cost spay neuter surgical appointments five days a week for dogs, cats and rabbits. Appointments emailing snip@phsspca.org. Prices range from $45-$65 for cats and $95-$185 for dogs depending upon size and other issues.

On Wednesday & Saturdays they also offer a lower cost vaccine and micro-chip clinic.

Rabies =$6 , Dogs and Cats 3 months and older
5-in-1 (DHLPP)= $15, Dogs 8 weeks and older
Bordetella= $15, Dogs 10 weeks and older
4-in-1 (FVRCP)= $15, Cats 8 weeks and older
Microchips= $20, Any age
They also offer Free Spay /Neuter services and Free Microchip to Chihuahuas and Pitbull. Call them for details.

As they grow they are offering more classes, clinics and free services to residents from the areas of Glendale, Pasadena, Arcadia, La Canada, Monrovia, San Marino, Sierra Madre and South Pasadena. But be forewarned… they seriously scrutinize you if you want to adopt.

On Wednesdays (9am-12pm, 2pm-5pm) they have a low cost clinic.

Another good resource is the Society for California Veterinary Vaccine Care. The SCVVC has mobile dog and cat vaccine clinics is Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego which are held at animal shelters, community centers, parks, and other locations in the evenings and on weekends to help make it convenient for pet owners to participate.
