A Vintage Kind of Mind

By Suzanne O'Connor

I have always shopped vintage stores. Whether they’re clothing boutiques, used furniture or appliance stores or collectibles and doo dads emporiums. For me, it’s about affordability as well as quality and design. But I got to admit, it’s more fun to shop vintage than regular stores. Always a lot of, “look a that” or “do you remember these?”

Vintage has never really gone out of style. People appreciate things that last, are well designed and give a nod to the past. A friend of my daughter’s was given a 1979 VW convertible bug from her grandfather when she turned 18. My daughter went nuts over it. When I asked why, she said the lines were retro cool, it was a convertible and it was soo “off the grid”. Wow!  They like to cruise Hollywood Blvd. in it with the top down. I suggested a different street.

Hubby also went a little bonkers over the VW bug, even to the extent of looking at the engine in the back and checking out the manual gear shift.

But then I got to thinking about how popular Mid Century is in home furnishings and how 1980’s and early 1990’s clothing styles are coming back into the main stream. No matter what era, good design is still good design. Quality craftsmanship hold ups and those vintage well made items are still around. Though these things may have once been “ dated” or even discarded at one time, it seems to me that they are finding a new audience of appreciation in a world full of fast fashion and intrusive technology.

Vintage pieces add a unique element to any home, to any wardrobe and are often statement making.

If you haven’t yet discovered vintage shopping try your local fleas on any weekend. You may well get hooked.
