Bargain Finds

This N That

By Suzanne O'Connor

While out and about in the OC last week, I came across a charming little thrift/ consignment store, call This N That. Initially I stopped in cause I tend to love little hole in the wall stores that sell used items. But as I wandered thru the place I noticed the prices are at least 10%-50% lower than other resale / thrifts.

My first clue was when I was looking through the rotating display of costumed jewelry and saw a 1980’s Bulova watch for just $20. Classic and quality crafted, back in the day I paid $189 (on sale) for my Bulova wrist watch. I’ve priced these at $40-$65 at Estate Sales.

Owner, Sandy is charming and easy to chat with which got me a little side tracked. But I was soon walking around noticing other great buys. Though some items were rough around the edges or stylistic dated, I liked the small shabby chic-esque 4-drawer, yellow hutch at $39 instead of $60. An Antique wooden Spindle twin bed frame was $99. I’d just seen one at the Salvation Army Thrift for $150. A pine china hutch was a good buy at $125. It would be $175 at any corporate Thrift. A wooden Tea Cart was just $60. A white doll bed was just $12. A 27” x 34” gold beveled mirror was $45. A yellow rose hurricane table lamp was $25 instead of $75- $125 at an antique store and a modern wrought iron floor lamps was just $21.

There was a smattering of used and vintage clothes with some good buys in shoes including a Colin Stuart strappy pump at $15 and a Guess clog also at just $15. She had a newly acquired collection of molded aluminum bake ware priced at $2-$20, instead of $8-$35.

But by far the best buy in the place was a fantastic Hoosier Hutch at $375. These collectable pieces usually run $500-$1200, depending upon condition and in tack features.  This one should have been marked at $650-$700.

Though not a destination store, This N That is worthy of regular pop ins if you’re in the area. You’ll never know what you’ll find. Charm and nifty deals await you.
