Estate Sales

By Suzanne O'Connor

If you like to treasure hunt for furniture, great buys on upscale stylish home furnishings will surprise you at the Hughes Estate Sale in Altadena. Savings here are 50% -75% off market or retail prices. These happen every few weeks starting at 8am on a Saturday morning. If you get on their mailing list they’ll notify of estates sales they do from San Diego to Ventura.  It’s at their monthly warehouse sales that they sell furniture that’s been pulled from storage units or estates that didn’t have time to arrange a formal sale. And the prices are so low ….their stupid!

Like all Estate Sales, to get the best pieces at the best prices you gotta rise early. Go in your jammies if need be.  I arrived at 9am and saw dozens of pieces already sold and being loaded into cars.  Some friends, who I see a lot of estate sales were walking out with an antique book collection.

This is a first come first serve sale and your ability to glance through and recognize quality and good design will aid you in pouncing on some serious steals.

Some Brown & Jordan wicker Havana style patio chairs w/ cushions were $200 a pair. Retail would have been over $800. A Near mint large leather sofa with nail head trim was another steal at $600.  A new, (still wrapped in plastic) white French Victorian styled sofa was $650, The matching settee was just $300. Both would have sold for over $3500 retail.  Some brass candlestick table lamps were a steal at $80 a pair and another more ornate set at $250 a pair.

A pair of ornate, imported Asian end tales were just $300. Retail easily would have been $800 plus for the pair. A classic, 4’ x 3’ gold framed beveled glass wall mirror was just $100. A wrought iron and glass round side table was just $100 instead of $350. A set of 2 tall, single door, hand-painted armoires from Thailand were $250 each.  A long hand painted country-esque dining table with 8 chairs was $1500. Retail would have been over $5000.  My favorite piece was a tufted fainting couch with blue & cream damask at $600.

Every sale is different and if you’re on their mailing list you’ll get notification with pictures so you can see if you want to rise at the crack of dawn. Even if you’re not used to such early hours, they offer donuts and coffee at these sales to make it easier on you.

Family run, by folks who have been in the biz for 30 years, shopping Hughes Estate Sales is a sure fire way to bag a great deal on some stunning estate furniture.
