Home Renovation and Repair

By Suzanne O'Connor

On any renovation or home upgrade sometimes it’s the little extras that really make a difference both in the look of your home and the balance in your checkbook. But because of price, it’s often these little details that we do without.

I’ve always wanted crown molding. But after seeing the costs of our little home upgrade soar I waited till I found the a great price on some classic crown molding before I mentioned it to hubby.  Between the savings on the crown molding, the low cost of the install by our contractor and the beauty it added to our bedrooms, we were able to afford to have it. Instead of spending $200-$250 on molding,  I only spent $60!

I started my search on the internet, scanning through Craig’s List and checking the small classified ads in newspapers. I was seeing quotes of $1-$2 per linear foot on closeouts. But these were limited in the amount available you could buy. I needed over 100 feet for two bedrooms.

Then I found Doors and Windows Plus in South El Monte. This family owned business has been around for 10 years and has the established connections to buy in large quantity from the mills and sell it at 40%-80% below retail everyday. I picked up some classic MDF (wood fiberboard) Colonial, primed 4 1/2 “ crown molding at 44 cents a linear ft. Retail is about $1.50 a linear ft They sell it in 16 foot sticks and you have to buy the complete stick.

Most the molding here is MDF but you can get solid wood and urethane. You’ll find casing, baseboards, wainscoting, crown molding and decorative elements here. Some 4 ½ “Georgian Crown was $12.80 a stick here instead of $20.64. A 4 5/8” MDF Carolina Crown Molding was $22.40 a stick here instead of $36. A Cape Cod 4”  MDF base board is normally $17.28 a stick, but here it’s $8.32… 50 cents a linear ft. and a MDF Crown Molding is $9.94 a stick here instead of $19.96. Of course, the best deals are what’s in stock. If they have to order the savings are not quite as sweet.

They also have windows, doors and fountains here with much smaller savings of 10%-20%.  A rustic full glass front hard wood door with wrought iron sidelights was $1650 instead of $1750. Some tall, sliding glass patio doors were $499 instead of $750. Most everything else in doors and windows was only at 10%-20% off.

Here the serious discounts are in the molding, but if you need a window or door, take a look around, you may find something at a fair price. You’ll find nice knowledgeable people, along with good service with terrific savings.
