I adore things that are old….vintage clothes, antiques, old
homes. I am not sure when this obsession started, but older homes
and buildings have always held a special place in my heart. When
I was dancer on tour, if we were booked in an old theater I was
the one who roamed around all the old building and would find out
it’s unique history. One old theater I roamed around while
shooting the film Staying Alive in 1983 was across the street from
the Biltmore in downtown LA. In it’s day it hosted many historic
theatrical performances. It since has been torn down and replaced
with a parking lot.
With property values at all time highs and developers running out
of open space many of these treasures are under the threat of disappearing.
PreserveLA.com is a free website with the latest news, information,
and techniques concerning historic preservation and the history
of Los Angeles and Southern California. You’ll find out about
preservation of many historic buildings, buildings that have been
lost to the wrecking ball, local tours of homes, the current state
of the old Ambassador Hotel, The Ennis House and more.
I signed up for their free newsletter and regularly get updates
on local preservation happenings including the free walking tour
in downtown LA this Saturday 8/13 to celebrate 25 years of the LA
Conservancy Walking tours. www.laconservancy.org
If you didn’t know that Los Angeles had old historic buildings,
you do now. You’d be amazed at how many there are and the
beauty found there. Plus you can do your part in helping preserve
them.
