The Costs of Retail

While I was visiting a Warehouse Distribution Outlet it dawned on me that the discounts were based on removing the large section of distribution and marketing.

This warehouse outlet was selling product at below or at the cost to manufacture.

So then why is everything so expensive at the retail level? The quick answer is COST.

Grey Market Know How

Describing what I do is complicated to non retail/ non manufacturer industry people.  Usually I say something like, “I research, post and promote Discount Outlets, Sample and Warehouse Sales.”

But when I am talking to someone in the industry, “I say I cover the direct to the public Grey Market sales and outlets.

Friends Who Pay Full Retail

I am often perplexed by people who ONLY pay retail, ONLY buy at Boutiques and Department Stores.

Believe it or not, I have had several friends who only pay retail. They live in the best neighborhoods and eat at the trendiest restaurants. These guys only buy brand new, latest and trendiest at top dollar.

The Gray Market

Every company that makes a product has to figure out how to clear out past season samples and overproduction Some hang on to product for over a year or two before they liquidate it.  More than a few liquidate to the big Off Price stores like TJ Maxx & Ross. Most though, try to liquidate it quickly & discreetly out of the main stream, so the general public doesn’t see their product at drastically reduced pricing. They don’t want to see their branded product sold cheaply at Ross Dress for Less. It’s the horror of horrors!

The Case Buying Quality

I believe in quality over quantity. It saves you more money in the long run, last longer so you shop less and has some value when you donate or resell the item.

But we are obsessed with Fast Cheap Fashion and disposable cheap furniture. Neither retain their value and after their short life span they end up in the landfill.

Back to School Prep

Getting the kids heads focused on going back to school is always a challenge.

During the Summer, all of us would avoid talking about going back to school and would instead concentrate on Summer fun, the last lazy days of Summer with family Beach trips and BBQ’s.

Secretly, I was quietly on top of it by Mid July.

Relying Too Much on Technology

We love technology. It does make many things in our life faster and easier. We actively use a lot of it. Waze and Google Maps, Amazon Echo and dozens of different Smart phone apps as well as owning 5 computers ad an iPad.

We get it.

That said, we also do not let technology rule our lives.

1980’s Technology Throwback

When I was little, my mom had an expensive heating pad that was in a word… AWESOME! She used it daily. It was worn, stained and faded, but keep working great. After she passed, I kept it and used it till last summer when it’s early 1980’s technology finally broke down. It lasted over 30 years. Seriously!

Annoying Calls

Our business, BargainsLA works out of our home office. We have only one land line for both the house and the business. Though we used to get lots of phone calls and at one time had two separate phone lines, we are down to one and are now considering cutting that line as well.
